These are standard published conversions. A label from one brand can sit a size either side of the chart.

How to use it

  1. Choose the system printed on the label: UK and Irish, US, US plus, EU, French or Italian.
  2. Pick the size. The row shows the other systems, plus the bust, waist and hip range from the chart.
  3. If the shop’s own table calls a UK 8 a European 36, read the FR column. That shop is using the French number.

Two different “EU” numbers

The chart is the Unit Juggler women’s dress table. In that table the EU column is the size used in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands and Scandinavia. The FR column is the size used in France, Belgium, Spain and Portugal. Italy has its own column, four above the French number. Australia matches the UK number for clothing on this chart.

ASOS’s women’s chart prints “European” as the French number: a UK 8 is EU 36 and US 4 on that page, which is the FR column here, while the EU column here says 34. When a shop chart says UK 8 = EU 36, use FR. A UK 12 is US 8, EU 38, FR 40, IT 44 and AU 12.

What to measure

Dresses, tops and skirts on this chart are matched to bust, waist and hips. Measure the bust at the fullest part, the waist at the narrowest part, and the hips at the fullest part, over light underwear, with the tape level. The ranges are in centimetres on the table.

These rows are a published chart. Two brands with the same number can fit differently, and a garment can be cut for a different body than the chart assumes. US plus sizes (the W labels) are a separate cut from the regular US number with the same digits. A US 16 and a US 14W are different rows. Ireland uses the same clothing sizes as the UK, so a UK 12 and an Irish 12 are the same label.

Questions

Is a UK 12 a US 12?

On this chart a UK 12 is a US 8. The US number sits four below the UK number for the regular sizes from UK 4 to UK 26.

Do Australian clothing sizes match the UK?

On this chart, yes: AU is the same number as UK. Shoe sizes are a different page, and Australian shoe labels do not all follow the clothing rule.

Why might the shop still send the wrong size?

Stretch, ease and where the brand places the waist all move the fit. The chart gets you to the right column. The brand’s own measurements, and the returns window, settle the garment.
