These are standard published conversions. A label from one brand can sit a size either side of the chart.
How to use it
- Choose jacket chest or trouser waist. They use different EU offsets.
- Enter the measurement in inches. UK and US labels use that number as the size.
- Read the EU size and the centimetre equivalent. Check the inside leg separately for trousers.
Chest and waist are different EU sizes
A jacket or suit labelled in the UK or the US uses the chest in inches: a 40 inch chest is a UK 40 and a US 40. The EU number is that chest plus 10, so 40 is EU 50, about 101.6 cm. French and Italian suit labels usually follow the EU number, so this page does not add a separate FR or IT column.
Trousers and jeans use the waist in inches for the UK and US size. The EU number is the waist plus 16: a 32 inch waist is EU 48, and a 34 inch waist is EU 50, about 86 cm. The same EU 50 is a 40 inch jacket and a 34 inch trouser. Reading one table for both is how orders go to the wrong size.
Inside leg, collars and Ireland
The inside leg is a second number, often written as L30 or L32, or in centimetres. It is not inside the EU waist size. A W32 L34 jean is a 32 inch waist and a 34 inch inside leg.
Shirt collar sizes, in inches or centimetres, are another system and are left off this page. Ireland uses the same clothing sizes as the UK. These rows are a published chart. Two brands with the same number can fit differently, and a garment can be cut for a different body than the chart assumes.

Is a UK 40 jacket a US 40?
Yes on the usual chest chart. The number is the chest in inches in both systems. The EU label is 50.
What is a 34 inch waist in EU?
EU 50. A 32 inch waist is EU 48. Add 16 to the waist in inches.
