Area does not convert like length
A foot is 0.3048 metres. A square foot is that number squared, 0.09290304 square metres. One hundred square feet is 9.29 square metres. Dividing by ten, as if area were a length, gives 10 and is the wrong room.
A room 10 ft by 12 ft is 120 square feet, about 11.1 square metres. Convert each side and then multiply, or convert the area with the factor above. Both routes agree. The all-units converter also covers square yards, hectares and acres.
Floor plans in two countries
UK estate agents often still quote internal area in square feet. Irish listings commonly use square metres. A “1,000 sq ft apartment” is about 93 square metres. Balconies, eaves height and whether the figure is gross or internal are the agent’s definition, and this page only converts the number you type.
Carpet and flooring sold by the square metre need the same factor. Add the offcuts yourself. The converter does not know the shape of the room.
