Units
Pints and litres
UK pints, US pints and litres, kept as different measures.
How to use it
- Enter an amount and choose UK pints, US pints, litres or millilitres.
- Read all four results. The UK pint is the larger one.
- Use UK pints for a pub measure in the UK or Ireland, and US pints for an American recipe.
Which pint is in the glass
A UK pint is an eighth of a UK gallon: 0.56826125 litres, 568 ml to the nearest millilitre. A US pint is an eighth of a US gallon: about 0.473 litres, 473 ml. A litre is 1.76 UK pints, or about 2.11 US pints.
Beer and cider served by the pint in the UK and in Ireland use the UK pint. An American recipe that calls for a pint of stock or milk means the US pint. Milk in an Irish supermarket is in litres. Mixing the two pints in a recipe changes the liquid by about a fifth.
Gallons, if the recipe climbs that far
Eight UK pints make a UK gallon of 4.54609 litres. Eight US pints make a US gallon of 3.785411784 litres. The fuel page uses those same gallons. A fluid ounce follows its own gallon: there are 20 UK fluid ounces in a UK pint and 16 US fluid ounces in a US pint. The all-units page converts those fluid ounces.
A “pint” on a British or Irish milk bottle of the old kind is the UK pint. A US nutrition label’s cup is another measure again, covered on the cups page.
